Does the course require any previous coding experience?

No. The course starts with coding fundamentals and does not assume that participants have any particular background or experience. However, because of the fast–paced nature of the course, it is recommended (but not required) that Evaluation & Management Boot Camp - Professional Version participants have at least one year of experience working in the healthcare industry in a billing–related, administrative or clinical position.

How is the course taught?

The course is taught using a combination of lecture, class discussion and individual/group problem solving. Assignments may be assigned in the evening to examine comprehension of the day's lectures.

You will need a CPT 2009 manual, a 2009 ICD–9–CM manual, and a 2009 HCPCS Level II manual for the class. Neither the "Standard" version nor the "Hospital Outpatient" versions of the CPT manual are acceptable for the Boot Camp course. Also, some people have begun to use CPT Expert (published by Ingenix) in place of the AMA's CPT manual. CPT Expert is not acceptable for this course. If you do not have the "Professional" version of the AMA's CPT manual in class, it will be virtually impossible for you to follow along with the class.

Generally, any version of the 2009 ICD–9–CM and any version of the 2009 HCPCS Level II manual will be fine for class. Note that some publishers publish "Expert" editions of the ICDICD–9–CM and HCPCS Level II manuals. While not required for the course, the Expert editions of those two manuals (but not CPT) are acceptable. If you have not already purchased ICDICD–9–CM and HCPCS Level II manuals, the following manuals are recommended:

Individual manuals are also available on HCMarketplace.

  • 2009 AMA's CPT Manual Professional Edition
  • 2009 ICD–9–CM Manual Volumes 1-2
  • 2009 HCPCS Level II

Does this course cover both professional and technical E/M Coding?

No, this course will focus on the professional services portion of E/M coding only.

Is this course approved for continuing education credits?

Continuing education credits through organizations such as the AAPC, AHIMA, ANCC, and CME will be available.
